This key work of Eirenaeus Philalethes was first published as Introitus apertus ad occlusum regis palatium, Amsterdam, 1667 and a few years later issued in an English edition Secrets reveal'd: or, an open entrance to the shut-palace of the king, London 1669. It was included in Cardilucius, Magnalia medico-chymica, Nurnberg, 1676, in the Musaeum hermeticum reformatum et amplificatum, Frankfurt, 1678, and in Manget's compendium Bibliotheca chemica curiosa, 1702. "The influential 'Golden Chain of Homer', written or edited by Anton Josef Kirchweger, was first issued at Frankfurt and Leipzig in four German editions in 1723, 1728, 1738 and 1757. A Latin version was issued at Frankfurt in 1762, and further German editions followed. In the late eighteenth century Sigismund Bacstrom made a rather poor translation of the work into English. Part of this was published in the Theosophical Society Journal 'Lucifer' in 1891. A number of manuscript copies of this translation have survived. Although the translation is more a summary than an exact translation of the original, it is an important late work on alchemy, so I have decided to include this translation here, despite its imperfections. I am indebted to Jerry Bujas for making an initial transcription."

Hargrave Jennings was a nineteenth century English writer and occultist. His vision of the inner knowledge of the Rosicrucians in this book is, at its core, very similar to that of the left-hand Tantric path.
You won't find much in the way of historical description of the Rosicrucians here. Key Rosicrucian documents such as the Fama Fraternatis, Chemical Wedding of Christian Rosenkrueutz and Confessio Fraternatis (see Waite's The Real History of the Rosicrucians) are not even mentioned.
Nor will you find any disclosure of inner secrets. Jennings constantly drops hints that he knows more than he is letting on, but states up-front that he is not an initiate. Jennings believed that the doctrines of the Rosicrucians were derived from ancient phallic worship, and to a lesser extent fire and serpent worship. In this book, Jennings constructs elaborate and constantly shifting sets of correspondences. He tries to interrelate huge sets of symbols and objects in his search for the elusive Rosicrucians. This is not a mainstream concept of the Rosicrucian doctrine, and contemporaries such as A.E. Waite summarily dismissed Jennings' theories.
