Τις νεράιδες τις συναντάμε σε διάφορα μέρη και με διάφορα ονόματα

στην Ελληνική ύπαιθρο και στα χωριά μας ακούμε διάφορα ονόματα όπως: Αγερικά, Αιθέριες, Καλομοίρες, Ξωνέρια, Καλούδες, Ανεμικές, Καλές Κυράδες, ακόμα και Ξωτικά.΄

Οι όμορφες Νεράιδες με μακριά μαλλιά και λευκά φορέματα είναι καλόγνωμες, αν και μπορούν να γίνουν επικίνδυνες. Οι άσχημες και μαυροντυμένες είναι πάντα κακές. Για τους Σαρακατσάνους οι λευκοντυμένες Νεράιδες ζουν στις πηγές και τα ρέματα και το σούρουπο μπορεί να ακούσει κανείς τις φωνές και τα γέλια τους. Οι μαυροφορεμένες κατοικούν σε σκοτεινά μέρη και στις χαράδρες. Λέγεται μάλιστα ότι μόνο οι Σαββατογεννημένοι και οι ''αλαφροΐσκιωτοι'' μπορούν να τις αντιλαμβάνονται και να τις βλέπουν να χορεύουν και να τραγουδούν. Αν κάποιος ωστόσο τολμήσει να τις αντικρίσει ή να πιει απ' την πηγή τους χάνει τη μιλιά του ή γίνεται νεραιδοπαρμένος, παθαίνει δηλαδή επιληψίες και χάνει τα λογικά του.

Σε όλες τις ιστορίες για Νεράιδες, γίνεται αναφορά για τραγούδια και συζητήσεις ανάμεσα στα πλάσματα αυτά και σε μαγεμένους οδοιπόρους που έτυχε να ακούσουν το κάλεσμα τους, περιπλανώμενοι μέσα στο δάσος. Αναρωτιέται λοιπόν κανείς, αν η φωνή των Νεραϊδών, μοιάζει με την ανθρώπινη ή πλησιάζει περισσότερο την γλώσσα των ζώων. Σύμφωνα με την ελληνική παράδοση, τα πανέμορφα αυτά πλάσματα, μιλούν τη δική τους γλώσσα, τα λεγόμενα «γεραγιδίστικα».

Με το πρώτο άκουσμα αυτή η περίεργη ομιλία μοιάζει σαν μια συγκεχυμένη σύνθεση φωνηέντων (κυρίως του άλφα), και συμφώνων (κυρίως του χι ,του σίγμα και του μι), τα οποία σχεδόν σφυρίζουν, αλλά όσο την ακούει κανείς διαπιστώνει ότι μέσα στο κεφάλι του (σχεδόν σαν μια διανοητική επικοινωνία) την καταλαβαίνει.
Aγαπούν το χορό και τον καλλωπισμό περισσότερο από τις συζητήσεις, τους αρέσει να καλούν περαστικούς, αλλά αν κάποιος ξεγελαστεί και τους απαντήσει του παίρνουν τη φωνή, ενώ χρησιμοποιούν τις θεραπευτικές τους ικανότητες μόνο σε όσους προσέρχονται σιωπηλοί και με φόβο. Σε άλλες ιστορίες οι νεράιδες εξαφανίζονταν και πείραζαν τους ανθρώπους ψιθυρίζοντας τους στο αυτί σε μια περίεργη γλώσσα που έμοιαζε με σφυριχτούς ήχους, ενώ όταν έπαιρναν ξανά μορφή μιλούσαν τη γλώσσα των ανθρώπων. Άλλοι τις παρουσιάζουν αμίλητες, μοναχικές προστάτιδες της φύσης και λάτρεις των τεχνών, που επικοινωνούσαν μόνο με το μυαλό ,αλλά αυτή η εκδοχή είναι και η πιο σπάνια.

Πέρα από όλες τις άλλες ιδιότητες τους οι νύμφες είχαν το χάρισμα της μαντείας και ενέπνεαν ενθουσιασμό σε ποιητές και μουσικούς αφού αποτελούσαν έμπνευση γι αυτούς. Τα χαρίσματα αυτά τα κληρονόμησαν στη συνέχεια και οι Νεράιδες οι οποίες μέσα απ' τις ιστορίες και τα παραμύθια εμφανίζονταν ως σύμβολα των τεχνών.

Οι αδερφάδες του μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου

Όντας ο μέγας Αλέξανδρος εκυρίευσεν ούλον τον κόσμο, επήγε και εκεί που βγαίνει το αθάνατο νερό, και εγιόμισε δυό λαήναις για να λουστή και να γίνη αθάνατος. Όντας τοις ήφερε ’ς το σπίτι, ένας αξιωματικός που του είχε γινάτι, λέει ’ς τις αδερφάδες του το μυστικό και τοις ορμηνεύει να λουστούν και να πιουν εκείναις, και να βάλουν άλλο νερό ’ς τοις λαήναις. Εκείναις αμέσως επήραν το νερό και ήπιαν και ελουστήκανε και εχύσανε τα απολούσματα ’ς το δρόμο. Εκεί έτυχε μία κόττα και ένας μπότσικας και εβραχήκανε με το αθάνατο νερό· και για τούτο η κόττα ξαναμουτεύει κάθε χρόνο και γίνεται πάλι νέα και ο μπότσικας δεν ξεραίνεται, και αν ξεριζωθή και κρεμαστή ’ς τον αγέρα.
Οι αδερφάδες του μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου άμα ήπιανε ταθάνατο νερό κ’ ελουστήκανε με δαύτο, εσηκωθήκανε ’ς τον αγέρα, ήγουν έγιναν αερικαίς, και από τότε είναι οι Νεράιδες. Εκείναις κάθε χρόνο παίρνουνε από τα χωριά κορίτσια σημειωμένα, δηλαδή καμμιά κουτσή ή καμμιά κουλή, και τοις κάνουνε Νεράιδες να τοις δουλεύουνε, και έτσι έχουνε οι Νεράιδες φουσσάτα μεγάλα· και κάθουνται μέσα ’ς τα λαγκάδια και ’ς τους βράχους.
Οι καθαυτό Νεράιδες, οι αδερφάδες του μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου, δεν πειράζουν κανένα, αλλά οι σημειωμέναις, οι δούλαις τους, πειράζουν και παίρνουν τους ανθρώπους. Όντας περάση κανένας μεσημέρι ή μεσάνυχτα από το μέρος που βρίσκονται, τον παίρνουνε οι Νεράιδες και τον βαρούνε και τον γκρεμίζουνε και του κάνουνε χίλια κακά. Άμα όμως νοήση και φωνάξη· «Ζη Αλέξανδρος ο βασιλιάς, ζη και βασιλεύει!» τότες αμέσως τρέχουνε οι αδερφάδες του και τον γλυτώνουνε.
Όποιος είναι αλαφροήσκιωτος τοις βλέπει, αλλιώς τον κρούνε χωρίς να βλέπη τίπτας. Πολλές φορές παίρνουν βοσκοπούλαις από τα χωριά, και τοις κρύβουν σε διάφορα μέρη, και τοις κάνουν αόραταις· έτσι αυταίς βλέπουν όσους έρχονται και τοις γυρεύουν, ενώ εκείνοι δεν τοις βλέπουν. Όντας δεν τοις χρειάζουνται πλιο, τοις απολούνε, και κείναις, όντας γυρίζουν, τα μολογάνε ούλα, πως έβλεπαν τους συγγενείς τους που περνούσαν από κοντά τους, και πως το ψωμί που τους έδιναν οι Νεράιδες ήταν ξερό και κατάμαυρο.

Ο βασιλιάς Αλέξανδρος κ’ οι Νεράιδες

Ο βασιλιάς Αλέξανδρος είχε αγαπητικιά μια Νεράιδα. Την έβλεπε τη νύχτα μόνο, κ’ εμιλούσαν μαζί. Γι’ αυτό τον συμπαθούσαν και οι άλλαις Νεράιδες και έγινε μέγας και τρανός. Αλλά κάποτε τοις θύμωσε, και καταστράφηκε κι’ αυτός και το βασίλειό του.
Οι Νεράιδες όμως ακόμη τον θυμούνται και τον αγαπούν. Και όταν σηκώνεται ανεμοστρόφιλας, οι Νεράιδες που είναι μέσα δεν κάνουν κακό σε κανέναν, μάλιστα πέφτει ο ανεμοστρόφιλας, αν ειπή όποιος βρεθή κοντά τρεις φοραίς· “Μέλι κι γάλα! Κάπ’ απ’ ιδώ πέρασι η βασιλιάς η Αλέξανδρους· ζη κι βασιλεύη!!
