8.Another Blue Planet?, Nature, New Scientist
The first convincing evidence for planets outside of our home
solar system was established just four years ago. Since then
thirty more planets have been discovered based on the same
observational principle: Starlight is analyzed by the star's
spectral lines i.e. very specific colors (characterized by their
wavelength from red (700nm) to blue (400nm)) are missing. When
the star is moving these characteristic lines are shifted due
to the Doppler effect: the light appears a little more red if
the star moves away from us and a little more blue if it comes
towards us. If heavy planets are orbiting a star their motion
will be balanced by a small, periodic counter motion of the
star. This tiny motion can be detected in the periodic swinging
back and forth of the spectral lines with a period being
equivalent to the invisible planet's year. The group of Cameron
et al. went one step further to apply more sophisticated data
analysis methods to directly detect the light that is reflected
off of a planet orbiting t Bootis, a sun-sized star about 51
light years from here. The difficulty of this data analysis
task is enormous if one considers the difference in light
intensity between the star and the reflected planet.
********************************************************
It is much bigger than the difference between sun and
moonlight since their distance to the earth is about the
same whereas the moon is much closer than the sun.
********************************************************
But signal detection problems of that magnitude are not too
uncommon in the realm of complex systems. For instance any
meaningful signals in financial or stock market data might be
hidden under a much larger amount of noise and masking signals.
Just as their finance colleagues the astrophysicists used all
the information about the starlight in order to subtract it
from the observed data. They recalculated the signal that they
would have observed based on the model that they built about
the star/planet system. Then they compared the results with
those they would obtain by using random noise only. The
conclusion is that there is indeed a 5% chance that the planet
signal is spurious. That value is not bad at all if one
considers that the researchers only had 48 hours observation
time on a 4.2 meter telescope compared to years of observation
time that goes for instance into the observation of rare events
in elementary particle physics. Even if it turns out that this
result is a fluke the method appears to be sound. That means we
do have a practical way to directly observe extra solar planets.
The model that fits the data best would predict the planet with
extreme properties:
*****************************************************************
One t Bootis planet year lasts only about three earth days and
because of the small distance its orbit is locked to the rotation
of the star. The planet itself is estimated to be about twice
as big as Jupiter and it seems to have a blue-green surface color.
*****************************************************************
Because of the close distance to the star, the temperatures on the
side of the planet facing t Bootis will be over 1200 centigrade. If
the planet is rotating relative to the star huge tidal forces will
be active. But if the rotation of the planet is locked to that of
the star, temperatures on the far side of the planet might be much
cooler and the gravitational pull much smaller due to the fast
rotation.
******************************************************************
One might speculate that on the dark side of the planet conditions
might establish that could support some form of life.
